How does magnetic particle testing work? A magnetic field is created within the test object. If a disruption in the surface or sub-surface exists in the test area the magnetic flux will escape through it. Ferrous particulates like iron shavings or filings, either in a loose and dry or liquid suspended form, are then applied to the area. If there is a breach in the surface of the object, the ferrous particles will be drawn to the damaged or flawed section(s). Magnetic particle testing provides numerous advantages in that it is inexpensive and provides very fast results. The cost savings alone make this type of NDT an attractive option for welding inspections. The portability of magnetic particle testing equipment also makes it ideal for a wide variety of uses including offshore platforms where the transporting of heavy equipment to and from facility is cost prohibitive. As the results of the test are clearly visible, even with a large test area receiving the results is quick and can actions to remedy the problem areas can be made that much faster.
